Wind - bottle-fed babies

While babies who are bottle-fed tend to take in more wind than breast-fed babies, this should not create a problem, as long as the baby is given the opportunity to burp once during the feed and once at the end. It is often assumed that burping a botde-fed baby after every 30ml (loz) will result in the baby taking in less wind. I have not normally found this to be the case, and more often than not I find that the baby gets distressed because the bottle is constantly being removed from his mouth. If your bottle-fed baby has problems bringing up his wind that leave him in a lot of discomfort, the first things that you should look at are the amount of formula your baby is taking and how often he is feeding. A formula-fed baby needs 75ml (2 ! /20z) of formula per pound of his body weight each day. I believe that overfeeding is one of the major causes of excessive wind. Occasionally, a very hungry baby may need a little more milk a day, but if your baby is drinking 150ml (5oz) or more in excess of the recommended daily amount, then
